Emergency Dental Care
Cracked tooth, lost crown or pain that keeps getting worse? Give us a call and we'll see you as soon as we're able.
When is it an emergency?
Tooth pain rarely clears up without treatment. It often points to an infection, and an infection can spread the longer it goes untreated.
If you have intense pain, swelling, ongoing bleeding or a mouth injury, get care promptly. We ease your pain first, figure out the cause and explain how we can fix it.

How we help when you have a dental emergency.
Emergency Dental Exams
We look closely at the painful area and take X-rays when needed. Easing your pain is the first step. After that, we explain your options.

Relief from pain is the first priority
Root Canal Therapy
A throbbing toothache often means the inside of the tooth is infected. A root canal clears the infection. We numb the tooth, remove the infected tissue and seal it, so the tooth can stay.

Tooth Extractions
Saving the tooth is always our first choice. If decay or damage is too severe, we make sure the area is completely numb before removing it. This includes troublesome wisdom teeth.

Common Questions
What counts as a dental emergency?
Any problem that needs quick care to control bleeding, ease severe pain or save a tooth. Examples include a tooth that has been knocked out, a bad toothache, an abscess or facial swelling, and a tooth that is cracked or broken.
What do I do if a tooth gets knocked out?
Move fast. Hold the tooth by the crown (the chewing end), never the root. If it is dirty, rinse it gently without scrubbing. Try placing it back in the socket. If that doesn't work, keep it moist in a little milk or tucked inside your cheek. Call us immediately. The best chance of saving it is treatment within an hour.
Is a root canal painful?
Usually not. The pain you feel comes from the infection in the tooth. With local anesthetic, a root canal feels a lot like having a filling done. It eases pain instead of causing it.
Should I go to the ER for tooth pain?
The ER can provide antibiotics or pain relief, but most do not have a dentist available and can't treat the tooth itself, for example with a root canal or extraction. A dentist can fix the underlying problem.
What if my temporary crown comes off?
Hold on to the crown and give us a call. It needs to be recemented to protect the tooth under it and avoid sensitivity. Until your visit, a small amount of drugstore dental cement or toothpaste can keep it in place.
